Key Challenger in Smart-Phone Battle
by Ryan Kim, Chronicle Staff Writer

Motorola and Verizon stepped up competition in the smart-phone market when they announced they would begin selling the Moto Q, the world's thinnest full keyboard-enabled phone, starting May 31.

Industry observers expect the thin, stylish smart phone to mount a serious challenge to Research In Motion's BlackBerry, the market leader, and Palm's Treo.

The device has been eagerly awaited because of its blend of form and function, which analysts believe could help the smart-phone segment more than double in size this year. Motorola and Verizon said the phone will be available online May 31 and in stores June 5 for $199 with a two-year contact.
